Some friends in NE Philly were babysitting my dog back on 9/28 and he ran away. (Still haven't found him as of this posting...) The Philadelphia SPCA is only taking in animals which are injured due to a dispute with the local animal control officers. However, there is an agency called PACCA (Pennsylvania Animal "Care" and Control) on West Hunting Park Ave. Which euthanizes in 48 Hours!!!! If your pets are taken there and you don't find them, they don't have a chance!!!! The conditions in this shelter are deplorable (i.e. dogs lying in their own feces, small drain for urine, indoor cages only). People were lined up there surrendering pets and strays...I know they thought I was a lunatic when I came out yelling for them to take the poor things home, but I couldn't help it...it was THAT bad.
:I just wanted to make you all aware of the policy of the Philadelphia SPCA concerning Pit Bulls, and Pit Bull mixes. Any Pit Bull or Pit Bull mix that enters the SPCA is given 72 hours for their owner to pick it up. If the owner does not come for the dog, then the dog is put to sleep. They will not allow anyone to adopt these dogs because they fear that this breed is too dangerous. I think that any animal care agency should realize that a dog breed is not inherently dangerous, and this sort of profiling is not only immoral, but extremely troubling. Although the story is not currently posted, if you want more information, go to WNEP.com, it should be posted shortly.
