Hello everyone. I've always been fascinated by dog agility and now I have a dog I think I could compete with. But I have some questions - first, regarding me. How fit do you need to be?! I am not the healthiest of people but I take Jazmin (my dog) out for at least three half hour-45min walks a day no problem. It's sometimes more than this as I have another older chap who can't really keep up with Jazmin so I take him separately when needs be.
Now about my dog. How old should she be? I have heard alot of conflicting views, from, start at puppyhood to wait until she's two years old. She will be a year old in April. She is a German shepherd cross collie but the shepherd part is the most dominant. She is about 20ins in height and pretty well-built at 27kgs. She isn't fat, but has big bones and alot of muscle. I will try to post some pics if you'd like when I get that up and running. She loves to run and jump things when we are out walking and she has alot of energy. She also knows commands to jump up on and walk accross park benches! Bad I know, but I wanted to see if she had potential! She also seems to need to keep her mind active or she will get bored and "throw tantrums!". Well, she is a teenager! But she is good at obediance and has passed a couple of beginners certificates at our training school. So from the sound of her, what do you thhink?! Will she be a good choice to do agility with. I think it would benefit her, as it would help her get rid of all that enery and give her mind something to think about.
My other query is - as she is a shepherd cross I am worried about hip displaysia and she does appear to have some very subtle signs. The vet is not too worried at this stage but I know it could affect what she is able to do. Would she still be able to do agility? I do not want to risk her health. Sorry for this very long post! But thanks for your help in advance.
