: Also, is there any way to teach this with a clicker to make it more clear? I know she'd pull out of the sequence to get a treat if I clicked every turn, yet, I could do one and slowly work up?
I read a great article online about using the clicker to train weaves and have worked with my Aussie Suzie using this method. I just have push-in-the-ground poles at home, so nothing fancy... Anyway, you start with only two poles--does your set allow you to remove poles? You set your dog up to enter the poles from the right side--click/treat (C/T) without a command. Repeat until the dog "gets it," Then wait to C/T until the instant the dog actually weaves around the second pole to come back to you (which the dog will because you didn't C/T just for going through and it's wondering why). Repeat, eventually adding the cue "weave," until the dog "gets it." Work with just those two poles, coming at them from all different angles, and with you sending from a distance and sending from the off side (to the left of the pole) and the dog still entering from the right side and weaving around the second pole--that part is pretty tricky, but a clicker trained dog will catch on very fast because they get good at offering behaviors. Once the dog can enter the poles correctly and reliably from all angles and with you on either side of the poles and at any distance, add one pole. Work with those three on correct and reliable entries and weaving from all angles and both sides again for a while, then add the fourth pole, and so on. With a C/T savvy dog, this should only take a few weeks of short daily practices (I keep practices on the weaves down to about 5 minutes--Aussies get bored pretty easily, even if there are treats involved!).
Good luck and let us know how the weave training goes!
