Okay, I think I sent the clicker weave article to you. Also check out the website I posted in my earlier post - this is really good info on the slant poles.
:I think that's why I decided to ask before trying "everything." My dog is a shiba inu- kind of similar learning style to the besenji. It's not that they aren't bright, but they don't see the world like a lab or golden retriever.
Interesting. The build of the shiba is very similar to my basenjis and size is close too. I've often wondered if this had some bearing on Digital learning to weave. It seems like the weaves are set about a stride and a half for him and this seems awkward. Whereas with BC's or larger dog it is one stride. However, our second competition basenji, Jet, did not seem to have quite as many problems with the weaves as Digital. But then again he had the advantage of being intoduced to slant poles much earlier in his training.
Give the slant with targets and clicks ago and see what you think. I think it would be worth it.
:I might try the slanted poles, she's very space oriented (but not in the way the channels make her go). A "reminder" in front of her might be best.
Does she know about target sticks? Now this is a weave method I haven't tried, but could help your shiba. Hmmmm, I'm guessing you can see the possiblities? If not holler.
:As for class, I think I will just explain that I don't think that channeling method is working for my dog. They are good instructors and should understand that- especially since I am working on it at home.
Good, good instructors are especially important with the "unusual" breeds.
:Thank you for breaking it down into the steps. I can get her into it fine so we are having problems on the "keeping it going" part.
I know of dogs that would weave 12 poles, but couldn't weave 6 or 8. When I started training the class used 10 poles. For a long time it was VERY difficult to get my dog to do 12. 10 was his limit. Who says dogs don't count?
:Teeter- no big deal. Jumping- there aren't enough of them for her. Contacts- she's getting really good at.
This is much the same with my basenjis. My old female actually learned to do the teeter by watching the other dogs do it. She was a riot.
:
:I'm sure it's my body language "pushing" her out in the channels. When working in a straight line, I have to focus very much on what I do and how I do it.
You need to focus on the weaves until she's finished. Do NOT glance up to see where the next obstacle is at this point. Pretend there is an extra pole at the begining and an extra one at the end. This will help you get her in the right place for her entry and keep her in until the end.
Let us know how this goes.
