: Hello, Linda.
: Thanks for responding to my question about 'Dales. I love the breed, tho I've never had one. I think I feel like I might be missing something not having had an Airedale. But now my question is: do you think Sassy is special because of the training you've given her, or becuase she's an Airedale? Do you think you'd feel differently about any dog you own? Like you said, don't we all think our dogs are special??? I'd love to hear anything you have to say about your Airedale or any other 'Dale you know of. I want to learn as much as possible about these lovely dogs. Thanks! Kim

Hi Kim,

I would have to say both...This will be a rather long post so grab a soda or coffee or what ever you grab. My very first dog as an adult was gotten about 4 years ago. My daughters said I had to see these puppies. I saw these puppies and they were cute. Palanca is a cocker/chow mix. She has all the charm of both breeds. I knew nothing at that time about training dogs. I thought if they barked and they loved the family it was all good. I was wrong and my vet told me rather bluntly that if I chose not to train this puppy who at 6 monthes was very guardy, I would not have a pet I would have a dangerous animal.

So I began checking out the training services in my area. I found that dogs were being trained for many things. But not simply manners. "Ms P" as we often call her had no need of title training she was simply a pet. After many horror visits to training centers. I called my vet in frustration and tears. He told me if I could not find anything that I thought I needed to train for obedience but for the sake of "Ms P" not to give up. I was talking to a very dear friend who talked about the Kennel that raised Lakelands and Airedales and that this kennel had many kinds of training programs. I called, I scheduled an appointment and both my husband and I went. Pat Mueller the owner & trainer was training what I called a monster dog. That dog wanted to get everthing and every one in sight. I have never seen anything like it. In ten minutes Pat had the dog under control and walking not lunging on a line (leash). Sign me up today was my thought. So I started mannering classes. Now I will tell you that my dog spent the first 3 weeks of a 10 week class under my chair. I will also tell you that I took her through two sets of classes, but remember I had not done anything with this dog because I simply did not know I need to.

I became close friends with Pat and the other people at the kennel. When I discovered all the things you could do with dogs....I was very interested. But I also knew that those were not the things my dog would enjoy. So I put that dream if you will on hold.

Pat has some of the most remarkable dogs I have ever seen. I know that it is due to the love she has for her animals and the training that she does. Ruby is her kennel person and she is also called the kennel nanny. She and Pat co-own a pair of "Dales" that are awesome. The titles behind their names are long and they have earned every one of them. Tallie & Hunter are Sassy's parents. After much time talking to Pat & Ruby about my love of this breed, we put a plan into place. We knew that we did not want Palanca inprinting on the puppy so for the first 18 monthes of Sassy's life she lived at the kennel, so that the inprinting was done by her parents.

I would take leave "Ms P" at the kennel and take Sassy home. I would cry both ways because I was always leaving someone behind. It was hard I often thought about just bagging it and take them both home. But I did not. I trained Sassy the "Quansa Way" and now I have a Airedale that has her CGC & TDI & is working for her CD title. I also have an Airedale that is pack leader and I have seen her get between "Ms P" and things of people that makes "Ms P" nervous.

There is so much more to this story that I could share. I have come to understand that training is the key to a well mannered dog. I have well mannered dogs that are still dogs I have not trained the dog out of them. So to answer your question my Airedale is the way she is by design...I should also tell you that because I have some medical factors here that I could not have anything less than dogs who were well mannered. If I tell my dogs to settle they need to do just that......for me I would not have it any other way. I have a web site if you would like to see it just let me know.

Again I apologize for the long post but you would not have really understood any other way. Quality breeders and training are the way to go...or least it has been for me.

Linda
