: Thanks again, Linda!
: I think I've seen your dog's breeder site on the web...There aren't too many breeders of Lakelands and Airedales.
: What makes these Airedales "awesome"? Do they behave particularly well, and do they do so when they are off-lead?
: I've read one gal's writing who said that her 'Dales gave her grey hair, and also gave her reasons to celebrate each day. I don't want the grey hairs! What is it about Airedales that makes up for the grey hairs? Do you think, from the 'Dales you've seen, that most owners woudl agree with that writer's statement?
: I'm going to get a pup in several years to compete in agility with and train for Search and Rescue. I might use the dog officially, as I'm a State Trooper and might be able to take the dog with me for our frequent SARs. Or, I might just train the dog as a hobby and have a lot of fun with it. Do you think an Airedale is the breed to choose?
: I have now a young Giant Schnauzer and she has such zest for life and such a sense of humor...I adore her. She gives me no grey hairs, only smiles. But the Airedale still tugs at my heart and I want to find out more about them!
: Thanks again.
: Kim

Hi Kim,

There are many things that makes this breed awesome....they are friendly, they are easy to train, they are willing workers and they are fun. I have owned Sassy for 2 years. She is a dog who has been raised to be a well mannered dog. Any other way will not fly.

I have seen unmannered Airedales. Pat also does rescue work. Some of these dogs can be retrained and put into any home. Other dogs can be trained but can only be put into homes that are safe for the dog and owners. It depends on the dog and what has happened in it's life.

I think that any dog not well mannered can cause grey hair. My "Ms P" has been the cause of a few until I learned how to deal with her. She is very aware of stress in my life....I can always when my stress level is high as she stops eating. In fact when my dad was very ill and dying we took "Ms P" to the kennel as she had stopped eating. After 2 maybe 3 days away she is fine. But she is the cause of more grey hairs than Sass. I know that I keep saying this but proper training is the key.

Both of Sassy's parents have worked on tracking titles and since terriers are earth dogs it makes sense to me that they could be trained to do SAR. I also think they could do it well. I have never seen it done, however I can not think of any reason that an Airedale could not. Pat has said more than once that our dogs are only limited by us as owners and trainers. My Sass will never be an agility dog with me, simply because I could not do it. She will have every title I am able to put on her. But that is the key, it is what I am able to do.

I hope this helps. If you have seen the Quansa web site. Be sure to visit all the different areas within the site. Pat's training is know in many areas of the country as well as the world. She has trained via the web site as well as travels to many different places to hold training seminars. She is am amazing woman, who loves the breeds and wants peoplpe to own the kind of dog that will make them happy.

I firmly believe that "Ms P" is a much happier dog having been trained and knowing her limits. I have not changed her temperment....she will always be a Cocker/Chow mix with all the charms. But she now knows her limits and that within those she is safe. I am not sure it that makes sense. She knows and trust me to keep her safe. That is my job and as long as I do my job she is free to do hers....simply be loved and be a pet. That makes it all good in my opinion.

Some people don't share training opinions...I respect that....some training methods would not have work for my dogs. I feel that I have found the one that has....and from what I have seen, would work for any dog whose owner is willing to follow through. Our dogs are only limited by us as trainers.

Peace to all...again I am so sorry for the long post.

Linda
