:I lost Sadie in June. She was a nine year old aussie mix. Sophie grieved alot and was having strange behavior changes since Sadies loss...so I thought..maybe another dog would help. WRONG. She hates this puppy. Right now..I have them sperated by a baby gate. If Rio goes near the gate..all I hear is a horrible growling. Then at times....she appears ok and is wagging her tail at him. I live by myself and am afraid to try them together without anyone. Any advice on how to get them together without a fight?? Thanks. By the way..he has only been here two weeks. Should I wait longer with the gate up??

Hi Pat. Sounds like that baby gate should stay up and the two of them separated for a while longer. Can you put something with the pup's smell in with Sophie so she can get used to his smell? I know Rio no longer has those puppy pheremones working for him (and they might not have worked with Sophie anyway). Also, you could try feeding them on opposite sides of the baby gate....a good ways apart but within sight of each other, and see how that goes. Get Sophie used to Rio's presence but without him being on top of her, so to speak. I'm not that familiar with Akitas, and you are the best authority on
Sophie and what she might be feeling. Study her, look for what her touchpoints are. Does she growl if the pup bounces towards her? Try to break down her good and bad reactions and see why the reaction, if you can. And keep coming back here. Someone may have a much better answer than me.
