Any double-coated dog needs a bit of help bearing the heat of summer. A good shedding tool (my friends with Australian Shepherds are recommending something called a Coat King) helps with clearing away dead/unwanted underhair while still leaving the guard hairs in place. Some other tips for keeping cool -- putting ice in water bowls (or if your dogs chew ice, which is bad for their teeth), freezing a liter bottle of water and placing that in the water bowl as a coolant, fans for air flow, keeping trips outside in the cooler hours if possible....all help to make summer more bearable.
