Poor Maize! And I am so sorry for you and your family, G. True, it doesn't often happen during spaying - it is a fairly routine operation, but that's no comfort to you and yours.

Did your vet do an autopsy or know what caused Maize's death? Two things I can think of right off the bat would be a defect in the heart or sensitivity to anesthesia. The latter can be tested before an operation with a pre-op screen. As for her body (and I am reading this late; forums kept kicking me off yesterday for some reason) there is cremation (or maybe your vet could keep her body in cold storage for you for a couple of weeks until the ground is softer?) I am SO sorry.

I do think that her reluctance to stay was more her not wanting to be parted from you in a strange place than anything else, if that helps any. Also, they do have grief support chats here almost every night of the week if talking with others would help.
