Aggressive biting beagle

We have a beagle about 1 1/2 years old. Female. Found her wandering the streets about 9 months ago. For the most part has a very sweet temperament. She is very agressive and will bite when she has something in her possession. Very possessive with food, her toys, and everthing else she can steal. We would like to keep her but have a 3 year old granddaughter and are afraid she could be bitten. Up to now we have monitored them and they play well but Madison, our granddaughter, knows not to get around "Sweetie" when she has something in her mouth, etc. Can a beagle be trained not to be aggressive? Any help would be appreciated. If not we are going to have to find another home for her as soon as possible. Anyone want a beagle that is sweet most of the time?
