some dumb questions about Beagles :)

I am thinking of adopting a dog, it must be small and easy going. My Shepherd has seizures and is on heavy meds, I do not want a dog that could attack during a seizure (he is never left alone but it can happen in a second)does a Beagle sound like a good dog for me? I have the love and room for another dog. Oh and another important question I walk briskly every day for exercise/health reasons and I know that Beagles like to sniff, is it possible to train one to walk briskly (of course some sniffing is expected of any dog). We have a huge fenced back yard for plenty of sniffing at other times :) Thanks for any input :)
