I have a beagle too, Belle. She was abused for three years and I adpoted her a few years ago. She hates being left alone. She will start howling about thirty seconds after the door is closed. But if we leave her in the back yard with our other dog, Cookie, a sheltie/beagle mix, she calms down. The second dog is much older, and has always had a calm disposition. I would say that if you are willing to have 2 dogs then you should another, older dog from a pound to calm the beagle. Belle looks up to Cookie and is more content to be alone when she is with her.
