Hi. We have 3 Bichons, ranging from ages 4 months to 8 years. We began with all 3 sleeping in the crate, and experienced the same problem - bouncing around and howling in the middle of the night. And we also did the same thing - let them sleep in our bed early on. You are right - Bichons are super smart, but I don't believe that they view it as they are controlling you; they view it as they get to sleep next to somebody in a nice warm bed. We've had no problems with training them to go outside, to listen to commands, etc. even though we let them sleep in our bed so early on. I think that your puppy will become an excellent dog even though he sleeps in your bed already!
