Just because he CAN go 12 hours does not mean that it's comfortable or to be expected. I occasionally have to work long hours. The way I look at it, anything beyond 8 hours for an adult dog to hold it is luck on my part. For small breeds it is a bit less... small breed=small bladder. Try for 6 hours if possible and when you are home, every 2 to 3. He'll get the idea. If you have a crate, use it. Unless he works himself up to the point of physical harm, he will learn to deal with it. In the long run, it is important for a dog to learn to rest quietly in a crate. They will at minimum encounter that environment at the vet's office. A peanut butter and yogurt filled Kong is enough to occupy all but the most agitated dogs. Good luck!
