No sleep in our house!

We have an 8 month old bichon who has been sleeping in a crate. Lately, he has decided the crate is no good for him and starts to howl at 2 a.m. and does not stop until we get up. Having many sleepless nights, I have let him come to sleep in the bed which stops the howing. He is a pretty smart guy and is training us rather than vis versa. Any ideas on how to get him to sleep through the night in the crate?
