: Oh! Another question: do you suggest mixing veggies with the meats, or feeding them separately on another day? Does it matter at all? Also, how about the bone to meat ratio in duck necks? Do you know how I could find out what the ratio is?
What I do is follow the feeding plan in the book Grow Your Pups with Bones by Ian Billinghurst. It is one meal a day of meaty bones (MEATY! not just things like chicken backs... I use some chicken necks and backs, some meatier chicken cuts, and some turkey necks, but I also use whole rabbits and lamb breasts). Then the second meal is equal parts veggie mush and muscle meat, PLUS organ meat, PLUS yogurt, eggs, and supplements. I found, years ago when I switched from raw homemade using Pitcairn's recipes, to the "BARF" diet, that if I left out the yogurt, muscle meat, and/or organ meat, my dogs didn't do as well. I have come to believe that the biggest mistake most new BARFers make is feeding too much bone and too little meat/yogurt/egg.
If you don't want to feed dairy products, I think that's fine, but you need to include a bit more muscle meat and egg to make up for it.
Bone to meat ratio in ducks is PROBABLY around the same as in chickens, which is around 50 percent (like a back). You will find a lot of very useful information in the following links:
Nutrient Content in Whole Chickens
NUTRIENT COMPOSITION OF WHOLE VERTEBRATE PREY (EXCLUDING FISH) FED IN ZOOS
I hope this is helpful to you! My suggestion is that you need to feed more things like meat and egg and, if you wish, yogurt. You might also want to double check that the feeding plan you are using is one that has been used by a lot of people over a long period of time, and is really complete and meeting all your dog's needs. So many of them are not. :(
