In Reply to: Raw diet and mega-e.... posted by Diesel doll on January 23, 2003 at 03:06:49:
:Has any one had any experience with mega-e (Megaesophagus)? I am trying to rescue a puppy that has it, and I would like to get her on the raw diet that I am feeding my other dog's, but I am new to this diet so I am not sure if it would be OK or not.
I had a dog with mega-e and fed him a raw diet. Some mega-e dogs do well on a "soupy" diet, while others do best on a "chunky" diet... think meatballs, hard scrambled eggs, and so on.
It's a question of experimentation.
The young age of this pup makes me think it's congenital, but do explore the different things that can cause mega-e. Sometimes it's thyroid disease or a condition called myasthenia gravis. Definitely pursue a diagnosis and treatment if that's the case!
I also used a number of holistic therapies with my dog and he did extremely well after we got his diet figured out. He couldn't eat meaty bones but I could make meatballs of ground meaty bones, or use stew chunks and a calcium supplement.
There is a great list for mega-e support for dog owners, I highly recommend it:
The info on joining the list is at the bottom of the page.
All my best,
