Perhaps there is an alternate reward you might use? Many working dogs are trained using a short play session with a ball as a reward. I have one who gets a single kleenex to shred. It must be something that the dog really likes and is short enough in duration so that he does not become completely distracted. Watch your dog closely and get creative. Try to find something in his/her daily life that is a highlight of the day and adapt that to a reward. Every dog is different. Many are food motivated. Some aren't. Good luck!
