UC Davis researchers seeking Sighthound DNA samples
Researchers at the UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory are developing a new test to detect the ivermectin sensitivity genetic mutation in dogs.
Ivermectin toxicity has long been known to occur in Collies, and Dr. Katrina Mealey of Washington Stage University has found the mutation that causes the sensitivity to the drug. We have found the mutation in several other herding breeds as well. Some veterinarians report seeing a similar condition in some sighthound breeds, so now we would like to test sighthounds to see if the mutation is present.
We request your help by asking you to submit cheek swab DNA samples from your sighthounds. We need a large number of dog samples from all over the country, regardless of their status of ivermectin sensitivity.
Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide individual results as we are evaluating the population as a whole and not individual dogs; however, we do hope to publish the results. We hope to collect all the samples by the end of January, 2003.
