There isn't much you can do. In the normal environment, the difference in weight between those sperm containing the lighter Y chromosome and the heavier X is negligable. My only guess is that perhaps the male, since he has only ever produced one female pup, carries a lethal, sex linked (to the female) trait. That's doubtful, since sex linked traits usually are expressed in the male offspring. Just a thought.
