My 6 month old Brittany is very active. Sometimes he gets excited and nips (actually, it really isn't sometimes, it is MOST times). Another thing is that he ALWAYS jumps. I have tried grabbing his muzzle for the nipping and giving it a little shake, but he knows my hand is coming and jumps back immediately after the nip. He turns it into a game. I try to avoid it but it is hard to get away (I am usually out in the yard with him and I have to get all the way back inside). I am thinking a squirt bottle might help, but I won't always have it and I don't want him being afraid of water.
As for the jumping, He LOVES to jump. I try putting my hand in front of his face as he jumps so he gets disoriented a little bit, but then he starts his nipping game. I also tried the thing with the knee when he is coming up, that works a little bit but usually he just tries again, and he also jumps behind me.
I've heard the jumping can be helped by telling the dog to sit, I would try this one but he is going to be a show dog and the breeders advised not to teach him to sit because we don't want him to sit during the show.
I really need to get these problems fixed soon, I don't want him like this as an adult as I think it would make visitors rather uncomfortable.
Thank you very much!
I will also post this same message on the training forum, but I figured since this is a Brittany forum, other Brittany owners might know what works well for the breed.
