Welcome to the board. Breeding Dogs is a whole different ballgame from breeding snakes. With the overpopulation of dogs as much of a problem as it is, breeding dogs to make money is unethical at best, and at worst murderous to the dogs you have produced. If you are willing to take full responsibility for every pup that you bring into the world, and by that I mean if a pup has to come back to you 10 years down the road, you will, no questions asked, then that's a start. There are also numerous health clearances to undertake, such as X-Rays for hips and elbows in prone breeds, CERF tests on the eyes, test for SAS in prone breeds, etc, etc. These won't guarantee that you won't produce an afflicted pup, but will definately lessen your chances. The only legitimate reason for producing more dogs in this already overpopulated world is to better your chosen breed. If that is your reason... your dog is a champion or otherwise proven specimen of the breed and you have carefully selected a mate with complementary traits, then go for it, and produce some pups that are true assets to dogs in general and your breed in particular. If you want to make money, find another species. The shelters are already overrun with wonderful dogs that won't ever have a chance to be adopted. Yes, a good many of these dogs are purebred and many are bully breeds. Before even getting into the mechanics of breeding, think long and hard about why you want to do it. The how's and why's of it are best learned by finding a mentor... an experienced, ethical, responsible breeder, preferably of the same breed as you want to establish yourself in. Hate to sound harsh, but these are the realities of the world of dogs today.
