I have a 14 year old female Long Hair Chihuahua whom I've had since she was 6 weeks old. LaVie is in great health, she can run up the stairs faster than I can. My concern is her teeth and how often she will have to be going in for cleanings. She does not eat soft food, she eats Avoderm dry kibble, and as much ODF (Other Dogs Food) she can sneak from my Rhodesian Ridgeback mix.
Lavie was just recently in for a growth removal (local cancer) and teeth cleaning when the vet explained her tooth decay is reaching a point that the cleanings may need to be as close as 9 months apart. The tooth cleaning prior to this was 21 months ago. This was only the 4th time she has had to be anesthetized and each time it has stressed me out severely. There has never been an issue, she has always come out with flying colors. But, none the less, I am concerned.
This concern is based on my personal experience of having to be knocked out 6 times between the ages of 18 and 27, currently 30. It royally sucked and I can't imagine my little girl having to go through this. Can any of you long time Chihuahua owners impart some of your experiences with an older Chihuahua having to be anesthetized regularly? I am also curious to see what frequency of teeth cleaning others are having to follow in the older Chihuahuas.
