Barking is pretty much a learned behavior. Your reactions to a knock at the door or someone new at the house are what will teach a dog to bark. None of my chihuahuas bark on a regular basis. I have a couple that have never barked.
Raising your pitch when someone is greeted at the door teaches your dog to bark as well as "jumping right up" to answer the door. Steady non alerting behavior is the key to a quiet dog.

:I'm just curious when Chi's usually start barking. Mine is ust over 3 months old and beyond a little air-filled whoof, he doesn't bark. Not that I have a problem with that, just curious if he will ever bark
