Hi, Nikki! I'm so sorry to hear that this happened to Boomer, but am glad he's home and doing well now.
I do have a couple of questions.
DID they actually tack his stomach? I ask because the Purdue bloat study found that 65.6 percent of the dogs that did not have a gastropexy (stomach tack) had a recurrence, while only 4.3 percent of the dogs that had did. (Bloat Notes, February 1998.) If they did not, and he actually DID bloat, I'd get it done ASAP.
I say "if" he bloated because you say he had gas in his stomach and I'm not quite sure what you mean by that. The "gas" in the stomach of a bloating dog is not gas, but gulped room air. So.... did he just have gas, or did he truly have GDV?
I would also reconsider having him on kibble while you figure out how to get him back to raw. The Purdue study found that diets with the greatest amount of kibble in them were most highly correlated with an increased incidence of bloat, while the more soft food, canned food, and table scraps in the diet, the LOWER the incidence of bloat. So the last thing I'd feed this dog is kibble. I'd give canned or home cooked but not kibble. (BTW, soaking the kibble made no difference, and in fact, in a later study they found that soaking kibbles that contain citric acid as a preservative actually INCREASED the bloat incidence!)
So if you aren't ready to move him back to a raw diet, then at least cook for the dog or give him canned foods. IVD has some very good canned foods that you can get at WagginTails.com, a geat company. They are expensive but it should only be for a short time.
Please keep us posted!
