Hi Christie
:DID they actually tack his stomach?
No, they didn't tack the stomach. They just ran a stomach tube and emptied his stomach.
:I say "if" he bloated because you say he had gas in his stomach and I'm not quite sure what you mean by that. The "gas" in the stomach of a bloating dog is not gas, but gulped room air. So.... did he just have gas, or did he truly have GDV?
I thought he was bloating when I took him in. The vet agreed until the first x-ray. His first x-ray showed his stomach was very distended (vet wasn't even sure it was the stomach) and opaque. About 45 minutes later they reshot his x-ray and it was gas/air filled and no longer opaque but still just as distended. He was belching and passing gas. After the second x-ray the vet said it did look like bloat though he'd never seen one start out as Boomer's had.
He had eaten about 2 cups of soaked kibble around 4-4:30 pm. The first x-ray was shot at 7 pm. When they emptied his stomach the vet said they got over a gallon of water and food mix out of him. This part confused me. He'd been out in the yard until around 3:30 and when I brought him in and crated him to feed he was not swollen. He didn't have water in the crate.
:I would also reconsider having him on kibble while you figure out how to get him back to raw.
I really don't want any of them on kibble at all to be honest. Since I became convinced to go totally raw five years ago (thanks to you :-)) I have hated any time I've had to feed kibble. Boomer and Roxie (we assume she is his sister) do not tolerate anything but kibble. She gets majorly *explosive* diarhea and he gets bad diarhea with some blood in it. Neither has any parasites. I had both on raw for just short of six months and the runs never did get any better and actually continued to get worse as time passed. Both lost weight. It's terrible. I've switched a lot of dogs over the last few years, both my own and fosters and I've never seen anything like it. Granted 99% of the dogs I've switched have been Siberians. Boomer has only been back on kibble for about six weeks or so.
Our regular vet feels there is something wrong with their intestines (IBS possibly damage from parasites or something) and the fact that kibble moves through the system slower and has artificial stool firmers and what not in it is why they don't have the runs on it.
:BTW, soaking the kibble made no difference, and in fact, in a later study they found that soaking kibbles that contain citric acid as a preservative actually INCREASED the bloat incidence!)
I had no idea about that. You are always such a wealth of info.
Any ideas to help get them back off kibble would be greatly appreciated. I am thinking perhaps I should dig out my Pitcairn book and try one of his recipes for them. I don't like feeding grains but maybe these two need them, at least for awhile.
