:My cocker spaniel itches nonstop. half of her fur is missing and she sometimes bleeds as a result from itching so bad. i give her a bath as much as i need to using medicated shampoo for dogs with flee and skin problems. IT DOESNT HELP!!
I know it sounds odd, but often skin irriation can be further aggravated by bathing. When we bath our dogs, we strip the natural oils & protection from the follicles as well as from their skin. This gives them less protection from environmental irritants than they had before!
Also, using shampoos targeted toward fleas might not be good for the dog either. Unless you see actual fleas, flea bites or flea "remains," the harsh chemicals in a flea shampoo or dip can damage your dog's skin & coat further.
i put little tubes of medication on the back of her neck, but it doesnt do any good, everything i have tried has failed, i am affraid to take her to the vet cause i am worried they will take her away. she is a sweet loving dog and i would appreciate any help on solving her problem. THANKS
What type of medication are you using for the dog? Is it a dog product or a human one?
I know it could feel as if you've failed your dog by taking the dog to a vet, but vets are a pet owner's best help many times. They are the professionals who have studied to help our pets. Whatever you might view as "odd" or "uncontrollable," the vet might have the perfect way to handle.
If this were my dog, I'd make an appt to take her in to the vet. There are many causes for skin conditons that can truly endanger your dog's health. Allergies to foods, irritants ffrom daily living as well as seasonal allergies all decrease your pet's quality of life...and can be helped.
