Selecting a coursing dog

I won't be getting another dog for quite some time (yeah right... until one picks me!) but I have been thinking, since Joplin is going to likely be permanently laid up (leash walk only, forever), what I would like in a coursing dog. It's pretty safe to say that the greyhound is my breed of choice. A few of the factors I was thinking of are:

Track dog versus AKC dog. As far as comformation or breeding possibilities go, AKC would be the route to go, obviously. Speed and size are the most obvious issues. The AKC dogs are for the most part so much bigger and more heavily boned. A good track dog is SO expensive, as the dog is expected to make up most if not all of his purchase price.

Male versus female. I am thinking a small male or medium to large female would give the best combination of speed and cornering ability. As far as fitting into my established pack at home, it would most likely be a male.

Unproven track dog versus retired racer: A retired racer who is confirmed sound would be the most cost effective choice, but he may have some hidden physical issues. As for an unproven track dog, as long as he will chase, his track record I can't see being an issue.

Puppy versus young adult: No question... I love puppies, when they belong to someone else! :)

These are some of the things I've been thinking about. Does anyone have any more considerations to add on? Like I said, this is not something I am planning on doing in the very near future, but when I do, I want to make a very sound and educated decision.
