:Well..... ahem. A Scottish Deerhound can do coursing right AND keep sound all their life, and is as big as, or bigger than, and AKC grey.
Different breeds, Christie :) A giant coursing greyhound doesn't keep sound all their life, nor can they corner or have the speed they SHOULD have, which isn't the speed of an IW or SD (Sorry, I love SD, but they're (nor is my love the Borzoi) not as fast as a greyhound is supposed to be)
< If a dog is a great running dog, I don't see that the small differences in size between an NGA and an AKC grey will make that much difference on the coursing field.>
Sorry, it's not a SMALL difference, Christie. Three-5 inches is a BIG difference. Talking to a show breeder who courses also, she says her 30 inch tall male is usually the SMALLEST special in the ring by far. Most males greyhounds in the show ring are weighing in at 95-115 lbs. They are not agile or fast. A difference of two inches in Borzoi affects their ability to course. Blaze is faster and more agile at 29 3/4 inches than Midnite, who is 30.5 or so. He can corner better, gain speed faster, and slow down faster. Taller dogs have a higher center of gravity. That's why you will RARELY see a great coursing Borzoi over 31-32 inches tall.
:I DO think that a dog with a passion for the lure, in whatever size body, is what you want here. If the dog is conformationally decent and physically sound,
Giant greyhounds are rarely physically sound, nor conformationally decent. That is the problem in the show greyhound world.
