...although I have a dog that's really good at "tuning me out" especially on the 'come' command. The best way I've found to counter that is to ALWAYS praise your dog for coming to you- EVERY time it comes- even if it's late and under every circumstance. It's too hard to hide the disappointment of a failed recall otherwise. A dog returning to it's owner (even if it's from a broken "down stay") is always cause for celebration. By "correcting" the break as it's walking towards you, you aren't teaching it not to break, you are teaching it to stop coming to you when it does. Also, you already know your dog won't come to you from the brush or lake, don't call "come" then. It's useless and weakens your command. Go get your dog or if you have to use some "happy talk" and another word use it. I use "cookies." You'd be surprised how fast dogs come to that word! Just make sure to back it up with some and you can get a really reliable reward system going.
