: : : : 5 months ago , my german shepherd got dandruff infection as my vet told me. My dog lost weight and appetite. My dog also also lost a half of his coat" or hair". as soon as my vet injected something to my dog and gave him vitamins , he soon recovered and and his coat also grew. The problem now is after 3 months I think. He soon is showing these symptoms again. hair starts to fall off again. Though his appetite and size has not change yet. Is he again getting sick again? what do you think this disease is?
: : : Yes, it probably was a cortisone injection. That's what many vets do when they're not sure what the problem is and fur is falling out. Please answer these questions so that I might know better if what I suspect the problem is really is. How old is your dog? What do you feed your dog? What brands of dry/canned food? Is the dog's fur falling out in patches? Are the areas red and irritated? Is the dog chewing at these areas? Do you give your dog table scraps or any vegetables?
: : : This may very well be a diet related problem - it was with my GSD. But I am also a strong believer in 2nd opinions. So, I suggest that you: #1) answer the above questions as you would be able to benefit from my experiences -- #2) make an appointment with another vet to get a 2nd opinion.
: : : The only problem with #2 is that most vets don't really have a good knowledge of dog nutrition. They just don't and therefore seldom attribute such problems to diet and use what they know best which are things like cortisone injections. This is not meant to put your vet down, it's just that new knowledge is emerging about the tremendous effect diet and vitamins can have on dogs' health.
: : : Please post back so that we can know how you & your dog make out! Thanks!
: : : The first time she was sick there was real dandruff in her skin as the vet has showed me. She always itches after a bath. My dog even have a few mouth sores. Though our climate here at that time was really hot 30-34 degrees centigrade. But the symptoms now is different than before. The problem currently is that hair comes off her skin and sticks to my hand when I pet her. These are the early symptoms that she used to have. I'm afraid that it would lead to the sickness she used to have.
: : Yes, my dog is 17 months old. I give her dog food mixed with milk ( performance woof chunks and Hi Pro). She likes it very much. Just like Kellogs. Sometimes I give her bits of meat, and chicken skin from my leftover food but w/o bones. this is very seldom only.Is she only changing coat thats why she is shedding hair?
: : Thank you very much for helping me :-)
: Is your dog just losing fur randomly or in patches? That could make all the difference in the world! Please tell me so I can try to help you out further. BTW, don't (!) give cooked bones of any kind - raw marrow bones are the best and the dogs love them!
Hi, I think its randomly. Only when I stroke her fur that I see hair on my hands. Is this normal or what? But she still has a good appetite , and she wags her tail when I go near her. A friend of mine told me that if a dog wags her tail , she's in good health. Well I don't know....
