Shave him. I'm a groomer and while it's horrid to have to do it, it's certainly nicer for him than having his ENTIRE BODY pulled and yanked to get the knots out.

You will then be able to start FRESH with him, brushing him every day (even while it is very short) so he becomes accustomed to it.

You ceratinly dont' want his first grooming experience to be one of discomfort. Additionally, it can take as long as 3-4 hours to demat a dog of this size (if not longer). IMagine YOURSELF having to STAND at the beauty parlor for this lenght of time having all the tangles yanked from your hair... NOT PLEASANT.

He'll grow back and he can wear a coat. I woudl guess by spring he'll be looking fuzzy, and by fall he'll have a nice coat to wear all next winter!

Also, work with your groomer about length - somewhere between "too much coat for me to maintain" and "I don't like him that short" should be what you are aiming for. Take him in REGULARLY to be groomed, even after the shavedown, so he can become used to the whole process. That will keep him looking even and tidy as his fur grows back, and help him learn what he'll need to do when he DOES have his coat back!

Good luck!
