I have a two year old Aussie who has recently developed some skin problems. His footpads are dry and cracking; his lower nose, the skin around his mouth and his lips are irritated; and the inside of his ear flaps are red with a minor rash. Otherwise, he appears to be in fine health. A few days before his symptoms appeared, I brought home an aussie puppy who he loves and plays with endlessly.
My vet speculated that he may have allergies or lupus. She prescribed him an antihistamine with some steroid assuming that this would be an effective treatment if his problems were attributable to allergies. After 24 hours, I have noticed some improvement, especially in his footpads.
Does anyone have any experiences with these types of skin problems or medications? Is it possible that he may be allergic to the puppy (ie dander or shampoo?) Also, I know there is no strong prevalence for lupus in Aussies but has anyone heard of other aussies who have the disease?
