:Does anyone have an experience with dogs with bladder infections?
:Cole has a fever and a bladder infection. is their an alternative to antibiotics?
I know from chat tonight that Cole is doing better now, and I'm glad! I'll share my experience just for general information.
Lillie, my elderly deerhound, recently had a bladder infection. The vets say it's because she is stiff and having some trouble crouching long enough to fully empty her bladder, and this is not uncommon in senior dogs.
We treated her with homeopathy, which is an individualized treatment. However, I also did a lot of reading on herbal remedies and I do feel this is something that can be treated alternatively. In fact, some people report that antibiotics have set off a series of recurring bladder infections in their dogs.
I have spoken with a kidney specialist who is an allopath, and she says that never, ever should a dog be put on antibiotics for a bladder infection without doing a culture and sensitivity test. And THEN you should do another one when the course of treatment is done, to make sure you really got it all.
So my feeling is, if you are going to do allopathy, do it right and be aggressive. But you CAN treat it with alternative methods.
Herbs to look at include uva ursi (which must be used with great caution!!), dandelion, cranberry, and others. A great resource is the book Herbs for Pets by Mary Wulff-Tilford.
