I've been posting on the long-term illness forum for a few months now about my dog Tebeau and was reccommended to come over here and get a few opinions. Tebeau is 13 and a half and a spitz x collie. His main concern, which I had been posting about, was a bad kidney infection which left them damaged and with reduced function. He lost around 3kg in total of his body weight, which is alot when you only weigh 17.5 in the first place! The infection is now gone but he's obviously out of the woods yet as he hasn't been off meds long enough to make sure it doesn't return. He is still excreting the protein from his urine which was causing him to lose weight in the first place but this seems to have stablised and doesn't appear to be significant any longer in terms of he's holding his weight and putting what he lost back on. My vet reccommended a diet with lots of white meat and carbohydrates, such as bred, rice, pasta, cereal, etc, as this would be easier for him to digest and less work for hhis kidneys while getting the weight back on him. He's not eating exclusively white meat as he needs balence and has been eating an all-natural complete food to make sure he gets all the vitamins, etc he needs. He also has bad arthritis in every leg except one. He has it in the elbow and knee in his front legs (which was broken and left with no treatment and is slightly deformed - Tebeau is a rescue dog) and one of his hips has almost no mobility left. He is on daily pain medication and it seems to be doing the trick as he is able to run and play now, but it was suggested a holistic approach might help this and all his other problems. He also has a heart murmur but he hasn't had symptoms for a good few months and is able to go for normal walks, etc. Despite all this, he can still turn on his "collie smile"! Sorry for the long post. Any suggestions are welcomed and very much appreciated.
