10PM ET Small Dog Chat - Long Term Illness Support

There are so many people- vets, behaviorists,etc.- that very readily prescribe mood stabilizing or anti-depressants (ie Zoloft, Elavil, Prozac, etc.) for an animal's behavior problems I am wondering if there might be holistic alternatives. I have been a psychiatric nurse for 25 yrs. I dispensed many of these same drugs to psych patients- human. I know the long term effects that some of these drugs can have on humans. I do not believe that studies of long term effects on animals have been done for long enough to be sure what side effects- reversible or permanent- may result. As many of these drugs have to do with seritonin, I am wondering if there aren't some other, natural options out there. For humans that do have a chemical imbalance, these drugs are usually a neccessity. But I also know that there are certain foods that increase the release of seritonin in the brain. (often sweets of some kind) So, are there alternatives for our creatures rather than jumping to psych drugs for the "quick fix?"
Thanks! Nancy
