::i just got a two year old silky terrer.i took him to the vet, gave him his shots and the vet told me that he is 75% blind and underweight. when i first took him home he would not stand up straight but kinda hunched over draging his feet. now after 3 days with us, he appears to be more comfortable with us. he is standing up straight, walking around and playing with our two larger dogs. he eats twice a day, but very small portions.also, it appears that his hearing is not good at all. now he, just out of nowhere he starts barking and growling also when you pet him or try to pick him up. he is not very social or affectionate. his grwling is starting to scare me and i need your advice on this situation. is it just a matter of time? could it be rabies? would could be the cause of him losing his site and can anything be done to fix it? also, his hearing? is this normal behavior for a blind and hard of hearing pup and what is the best way to deal with it?
::thank you, your response is most appreciated and needed.

:I don't have experience with blind or deaf pets - however, I can imagine it would be quite scary to be grabbed by something or someone unseen - if i were a blind dog just moved to somewhere new - I would probably growl when someone picked me up too!

:I wonder if there is a trainer around who has experience with blind/deaf animals? I have seen programs about people who have done amazing things with blind/deaf animals - so it is possible! I expect they take longer to adjust though. I suppose we should put ourselves in their position! It must be a scary world. If I were you I'd try and find an appropriate trainer. But good on your taking on a dog with disabilities -there aren't enough people who would. I am sure you will get repaid in love!
:

I have worked with blind dogs at a vet's office. Blind dogs aren't mean per say, but they can be when surprised. We had to talk to them before we tried to handle them, because they don't like being surprised - especially if they have back or hip problems.
If your dog is deaf as well then you may want to stomp on the floor when you approach him. you will also want work with a trainer that specializes in this.
