Do you do blood tests every year then? What is the likelihood of getting heartworms from a mosquito bite? We live in Wisconsin and by Oct. no mosquitoes.

:My personal opinion, and this will not be shared by everyone, is that heartworm is too nasty of a critter to take ANY chances with. A once per month Heartguard or Sentinel or whatever is much more mild and safe than contracting the worms. I am in FL and my pack is on heartworm preventative year round. I use Sentinel. If I have a foster or a stray who has Sarcopes, my pack also gets treated with Revolution, regardless of where they are in their month schedule for Sentinel. This is just what I do. Depending on your climate and your tolerance for risks, what you do is up to you. I for one am not willing to take the chance.
