I originally tried to post this as a followup but wasn't allowed due to the changes in the forum. I'm new around here but hopefully will be posting a lot cuz I found the place while I was at work and well...we all get bored at work :)
Anyways, here's what I have:
When I moved back home from college recently, my parents did not allow my lab in doors. So I had to keep her outside. Unfortunately it got very hot along with me making the poor decision of putting too much food into an automatic feeder. This meant a bad combination of the hot sun beating down on her plus her food becoming "stale" in which case she turned her nose up at it and wouldn't eat it...thus leading to some malnutrition. This malnutrition accompanied by the hot sun and the May flies wreaked havoc on her coat. She had a beautiful coat. Well, I noticed her hair was thinning and she got a "hot spot" on the side of her face. I immediately took action and sought a shaded place for her, fed her very nutritious meals high in protein (ie chicken, cheap steak cuts, etc) and cut out all of the "doggie treats" which sometimes can be a poor nutrition source. In addition to giving her multiple flea / skin dips, I started "massaging" her down with a bottle that contained multiple oils (one key one being linseed oil).
Thankfully I've moved into my new apartment and she is out of the heat and into the air conditioning. Her hot spot is entirely gone and her hair around the legs and butt region is growing back full. It's also becoming less "wirey" and back to it's soft original nature.
I think something you should definitely keep an eye on is the amount of heat she is getting (if she's outside), her nutrition, and then fleas. A flea bath never hurts, plus most labs look at it as a "treat". Mine actually likes the baths, she is without a doubt "made of the water"
