Hi antigone. Yes, Labs are truly consummate chow hounds. You probably are aware of this, but I'm going to say it anyway for the benefit of everyone: make sure that your dog doesn't get people food! I'm being purposely emphatic about this because I just took my four year-old Chocolate Lab home from the SPCA hospital last week after she had a sudden bout of acute pancreatitis, which was likely brought on by consumption of fatty human food. I adopted her a few years back when I was living on the west coast and never gave her people food, but moved in with Mom a couple of years ago where people food is dispensed a bit too liberally. I eventually gave in and let her beg, and I can tell you that I paid dearly for this mistake last week as I agonized over her two and-a-half day stay in the hospital, hooked up to an I.V. tube, recovering from dehydration (from the incessant vomiting brought on by pancreatitis), and undergoing imaging, medication, etc. It was just awful, and it's not over yet—she needs to go back for a day this week for more imaging because there was an abnormality in her stomach, which we're hoping was just an inflammation caused by pancreatic enzymes. I really should have known better, but I foolishly neglected my common sense. We all love our dogs, but in this area we can literally love them to death by giving them people food. I'm sure that everyone here is at least vaguely aware of the risks inherent in allowing canines to eat our food, but I think that my heartbreaking ordeal could serve as a sobering reminder. By the way, antigone, your dog is adorable!
