separation anxiety

I found my dog from the animal shelter a few weeks ago, and I can't leave her alone in the apartment. The moment I leave she begins to cry and yelp. I left her for an hour one day only to come home and find her on the window ledge, in the blinds. The blinds were ruined, but how do I help her not to be so anxious when I have to leave for work or just to go to the store? I have tried training her a little at a time but I must not be doing it right. If you have any tips on this please help!
