There is a range of treats you can try - you can even make your own!
I have made liver treats before (they go down a treat - but gee they make the kitchen smell!). I used a recipe which had all kinds of goodies in it but another trainer I know simply cuts up bits of liver and bakes them. There are plenty of recipe ideas on the Internet (just check out the ingredients to see if you agree with them - try not to have too much corn - its like red cordial for some dogs!)
My dog's preference is for garlic flavoured polony or cooked sausages. I too am not big on using "human food" but for the occasional treat - polony and sausages aren't too bad!
You could use some of your dog's dinner (depends on what you feed - I feed raw food - wouldn't like to be using that!) but I don't think that its "special" enough.
The other option is using commercial treats - can get expensive and sometimes you wonder whats in them. I do have some natural beef/liver strips on standby for this. They are easy to break into small pieces, aren't too smelly and can even go nicely into pockets if you don't feel like having a treat bag etc. I often pop a few in my pocket before walking for quickly accessible rewards.
Just make sure whatever you use that its firm and not crumbly, and something your dog loves! I think we all try a few things before we find the thing our dog craves and works best for.
ALso, consider using a toy as a reward - I use one myself sometimes (depends on what I'm training to be honest). Some dogs really work amazing for a quick play or fetch!
