Jean, I'm not a fan of dry foods. They are at the bottom of my list. In order, I like balanced home prepared diets with fresh ingredients, followed by canned foods, with kibbles in last place.
Canned foods tend to contain fewer starchy carbs and fewer or no preservatives (canning preserves food so chemical preservatives are unneccessary).
I have not fed kibble in 17+ years and have no personal experience with feeding any of the products currently on the market. I do think that if you are going to feed kibbles, the best bet is to select several brands that your dog likes and does well on, feed them in rotation and make sure that some fresh foods, and also perhaps some canned foods, also make up a good portion of the diet.
There are some excellent and easy recipes for supplementing kibbles with fresh foods in the book Dr Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats by Richard Pitcairn DVM PhD.
The Whole Dog Journal, a consumer publication that accepts no advertising, each year publishes a list of dry foods it feels meet a high standard. Again, I have not fed those foods myself, but their criteria as well as the current and all past lists are here:
Whole Dog Journal Dry Foods 2002
I have friends who feed Wysong whose dogs seem to do well. They do get about a third of their diet as fresh foods.
Good luck to you!
