:How many of you would be interested if shows offered an "Altered Dog" class for competition?
:Should these dogs be eligible for an "Altered Dog Championship?" What if the dog has some "regular" championship points and is altered later? Should those points be added in?
:What would be some advantages/disadvantages to such a competition?>>
I think time constraints would have to be a big consideration. Shows already run through most of the daylight hours-adding altered classes for each breed would be impractical for all breed shows.
I also feel that when I place a pet quality puppy in a home with a spay/neuter contract, it's because I don't want the dog shown or bred. My pet quality puppies are beautiful dogs-but they're not of the quality I want representing me in the conformation ring. And I think you'd see far more obviously pet quality dogs being shown then good quality dogs...
I *do* think that champions of record should be able to be shown in more than veterans classes if they've been spayed/neutered. Murrey's sire, who was one of the greats of our breed, comes to mind...Primo was Top Twenty for three years, a multi BIS/BISS winner with 2 DPCA Awards of Merit. He had to be neutered at a very young age due to serious prostate problems. As far as I'm concerned, he had earned the right to be shown anywhere, any time-and would always provide the competition.
Probably I should support this idea more, since I have a beautiful monorchid puppy here. I figure Rush will dazzle the crowd at veteran classes when that time comes-and that's enough for me.
