:Any suggestions as to best breeds for working couples--i.e., obviously no dog does great with no attention, but assuming much quality time when home and on weekends, which breeds do best on latchkey basis?

I honestly can't recommend any canine for this. Dogs are pack animals, and to spend too much time alone is torment for a dog. It's also very difficult to meet even an adult dog's needs for elimination, exercise, and other care if you're gone more than 8 hours a day. A puppy can't make it 8 hours at a time.

Be sure to consider a pet of another species. Cats, as just one example can thrive with a lot of alone time, because they are not pack animals and their elimination needs can be met through indoor litter boxes.
