Reena, thanks for your thoughts. I did not expect a dog whistle to be a magical tool. I understand that the dog needs to be taught to come when he hears the whistle. I just did not know whether the whistles themselves could be effective tools because I have never seen one and have never known anyone who used one. (It was sort of a consumer question after seeing so many things that did not perform as advertised.)
I think you may be correct about my expecting too much from our year-old lab. He responds to Come, Sit and Stay commands. He is well mannered and generally well-behaved but gets carried away a bit now and then when he is some distance from me. He enjoys his (wildly enthusiastic) runs so much that I hate to keep him on a line all of the time. I was trying to learn whether the idea of using a whistle, after training, would be a sensible way to communicate with him when we are a good distance apart. I thought he might hear the command more clearly that way (without disturbing others).
