With dog food, you really need to work out what works best for you and your dog. I am a big advocate of raw food - having successfully made the change myself and seen a big change in my dog's health. However, its not for everyone. I agree with Reena - the cheaper kibble stuff really isn't worth the money. The better brands sold at vet clinics are often better value as you feed less. If you are interested in feeding raw - visit the raw food forum - there are some good links there - otherwise, see what everyone says and then make a decision on what suits your lifestyle, budget and dog.

Treats can be anything that motivates your dog. Don't forget the option of using a ball or toy - labs sometimes work good for a quick game of fetch. Foodwise, I try and change my treat every now and then - so my dog doesn't get too used to one thing - a bit of a surprise! Cooked sausages are my dog's favourite (his absolute favourite is guinness and beef sausages!!) and he also loves garlic polony. Both of these are easy to chop up into small pieces, don't crumble, and have a great mouthwatering smell for the dog. I've also made homemade liver treats before - but they didn't motivate my dog as much as the sausages or polony (and they really stunk out the kitchen!). Then I use a commercial dried meat strip for surprise treats during walks (as its not smelly or mushy in my pocket).
Different things work for different dogs. I'd suggest trying a few of the posters suggestions and seeing which one your dog works best for.
p.s. I left a message on the other forum about whistles - a friend with a Lab found a dog whistle worked MUCH better for her - it somehow gets through that "I can't hear you, the smell is too strong.." labrador thing... She swears by her whistle and I've seen it work with her lab who is naturally a very big wanderer after smells!

:We have no idea what the one year old lab we adopted from the county animal shelter was fed before we got him. The Vet told us that any national brand of Dog Food would be appropriate. We tried something called KIbbles & Chunks. The Vet told us that a food alergy may be causing the dog to wipe his paw along his nose and mouth and that we should switch foods. We switchd to dry Purina Dog Chow. The dog eats it but not lots of it. We use some of that dry food and small dog biscuits as treats. The dog seems to be pleased with them as treats. A training video we saw suggested that we give surprise treats. We are not sure what would make acceptable surprise treats, and we are not too sure whether just dry dog food is a good idea. Your advice will be apprecated.
