:...I tend to cut the amount by 25% initially and go from there. So if they recommend 2 cups of food, I only feed a cup an a half a day (for an adult dog). I watch my dog and see if it needs adjusting- up or down (in the summer when more active sometimes we have to go up and in the middle of winter we reduce the amounts). You still have a growing dog, so for now, using the "recommended" amounts aren't the worst thing you can do. Your dog is still growing and gaining a lot of muscle. I wouldn't be too concerned as long as your are using scheduled feedings. Keep weighing your dog. He will eventually hit a certain weight and stabilize there. That's where you want to keep him. Remeber, the calories in treats also add up so if you are doing a lot of training in a day or a week, reduce the amount of food a bit. When I was really working on weight loss with my pup, I used a kitchen scale and weighed out her treats before a training session and after and subtracted that amount from her food. Most don't have to go that far, but it works great if a dog needs to shed some extra winter weight. Hope that helps just a bit.

I agree with Chelle - The amt. of food you really have to play it by ear- trial & error. Also true, going by the recomendations on the bag are not the worst thing you can do to a 1 yr. old pup.
Fiddle with it and find out what works for your dog. Cuz amounts of food that work for my dog are not necessarily what will work for yours. Best wishes and keep the questions coming! The only stupid question is the one not asked! Nancy
