:We brought home a 9 week old femail pug yesterday and I am noticing that she makes a big fuss when she is left alone in her room or her crate.

:We have a spare bedroom for her with a baby gate in the doorway and her crate, bed, food and plenty of papers for her. The room also has a view of the dining room and into the kitchen, and is in the hall between the master bedroom and bathroom so she gets a lot of traffic when we are home.

:When we are in the room or in the hall at teh room with her she is fine. But when we leave, she starts to wine and cry and does not stop. I know you are supposed to leave her, and I will, going to see her when she has stopped (probably just taking a bit of a breather from the effort of crying). But sometimes we can't be with her all of the time and need to let her stay there. This morning, I left her there for 50 minutes while I did my yoga and she cried the entire time. She has a radio on but tha doesn't seem to help.

:She also cries in her crate. We tried to crate her last night next to me while we slept but she didn;t stop crying. I wasn't sure if she needed to potty so I took her several times to her papers to go (she never needed to go).

:Am I doing anythig wrong?

:We live in Saskatchewan and it is still too cold to take her outside to potty and I would ideally like to train her to a litter box as well as outside for the winter months when it is too cold for anyone to go out. I am home for the next two weeks and would like to get her so she is feeling comfortable in her room while we are at work. We also have four cats, three of whom bascially ingore her while the 5 month old plays with her.

:I am being patient with her, but just want to make sure she isn't harming herself or causing undue stress.

:Thanks,

:N

Did you do any research on raising a puppy before bringing this baby home? I am not being patronizing or sarcastic, I am curious is all. Research should have explained that ANY pup of 9 wks. will most likely cry when left alone. Did she come right from the litter &/or the mother dog?
Was she used to running around the breeder's house? Did she live w/ any other dogs related or not? Puppies that age are virtually the equivelant of a human 6 month old or less. Yes, she can adjust to a crate and the separate room, but she's just not old enough to understand it all right now. And especially on top of only beingaway from the people/dogs/environment she grew up in. That's a big adjustment for any dog let alone a baby. You just can't expect her to "get it" all so soon. Time, patience & understanding are the key. But I will leave it to others who can give you a more experienced answer and advice as my dogs weren't crated, etc. as puppies- not that it's wrong by any means! It just wasn't the best option for us. Many, many people use crating and kennelling with great success- I'm just not one of them.
But there are plenty of very knowleggeable people on this board that can advise you and wisely. Best wishes, Nncy
