There are some "trainers" that specilize in dog behavior vs. rigid obedience the hold group classes. In our area the local humane society has wonderful dog behavior classes that teach owners how to deal with those very issues. The nice thing about group classes is you hear what others are going through and get solutions to "problems" sometimes before you see them in your own dog. A good way to prevent things or notice signs of trouble early so it's easier to correct. For young dogs, a behavior oriented class tends to be best unless one really wants to tran for obedience trials. Don't get me wrong- good sits, stays, comes, etc are the foundation to communication with your dog and can prevent many problems. It's just strict obedience instructors really don't tell you how to use those tools in your every day life. For example, my dog has a very strong "sit-stay" every time the door is opened so she doesn't trip me up dashing out the door ahead of me. She "comes" through when I tell her to and it's safe for all. My 2 cents.
